Our Founder

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was established in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

ISKCON has since developed into a worldwide confederation of 10,000 temple devotees and 250,000 congregational devotees.

Commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement, ISKCON is comprised of more than 350 centres, 60 rural communities, 50 schools and 60 restaurants worldwide.

The mission of this nonsectarian, monotheistic spiritual movement is to promote the well being of society by teaching the universal science of Krishna consciousness according to Bhagavad-gita and other ancient Vedic texts.

Animal Protection

The Hare Krishna movement has several farm projects in Australia, where
all the animals are allowed to peacefully live out their natural existence. On our farm just north of Sydney, in the Hunter Valley, almost a hundred cows are living peacefully and happily without any threat of slaughter.

The ancient Vedic philosophy of the Hare Krishna movement accepts that every living being is equal spiritually, only circumstantially in different bodies. It follows that all living beings, not just humans, should be given full shelter and protection. In support of this principle all members of the Hare Krishna movement are strict vegetarians and practice non-violence.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” - Gandhi

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet..” - Albert Einstein
