Our Founder

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was established in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

ISKCON has since developed into a worldwide confederation of 10,000 temple devotees and 250,000 congregational devotees.

Commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement, ISKCON is comprised of more than 350 centres, 60 rural communities, 50 schools and 60 restaurants worldwide.

The mission of this nonsectarian, monotheistic spiritual movement is to promote the well being of society by teaching the universal science of Krishna consciousness according to Bhagavad-gita and other ancient Vedic texts.

Food Relief

The Hare Krishna movement has become famous for its pure vegetarian food. Millions worldwide have been to our restaurants and our temples for meals.
As “Food for Life” we are the largest vegetarian/vegan food relief organisation in the world, providing free, healthy meals daily to the poor. 170 programs worldwide regularly distribute meals to people in 60 countries. We also help the elderly and student communities all over the world with subsidised, inexpensive, yet quality meals.

In addition to this daily distribution, special efforts are made during crises such as the recent tsunami and hurricane disasters, providing food, clothes, shelter and medical aid. All members are volunteer workers and dedicate their time to bringing relief to those in need.

• Over 100 million free meals served worldwide
• Over 100,000 free meals served daily
• Over 2 million free meals served in Australia
• Worldwide disaster relief
• Mobile food van operation in Sydney

“The commitment of Food for Life goes beyond the need for the basic necessities of life; it is a commitment to improve the quality of life.” - Bob Carr, former NSW Premier

“Hare Krishna Food for Life has set an example for all South Africans of a caring and community spirit...” - Nelson Mandela
